UPDATE: MARCH 8TH FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION NEAR DON $UPDATE: MARCH 8TH FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION NEAR DONNER LAKE Firstly, we extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the two pedestrians involved in the March collision near Donner Lake. This was a heartbreaking event for everyone involved, and our thoughts remain with those affected. Following a thorough investigation, Truckee PD has concluded its review of the incident. Our specialized traffic investigators—supported by our Crime Scene Investigation team and detectives—worked diligently to gather and analyze all available evidence, including physical scene data, witness statements, and digital forensic analysis. These types of investigations are detailed and time-intensive. We recognize the community’s desire for quick answers, but we also ask for understanding that certain information cannot be immediately shared due to legal and investigative constraints. Accurate, responsible conclusions require careful evaluation of facts. Investigative findings determined that neither DUI, reckless driving, nor excessive speed were factors in this collision. The cause was attributed to momentary driver inattention due to fatigue, leading to the vehicle leaving the roadway and striking two pedestrians. The case meets the criteria for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter under California law, where ordinary negligence, such as a traffic infraction, results in a fatality. We appreciate the community’s patience during this process.$
