Mission Statement
To promote the quality of life in Truckee through a partnership between the community and the Police Department.
About the Program
The Volunteers are an essential part of the Truckee Police Department. All newly appointed Police Volunteers will receive “on the job training”. New volunteers will be issued uniforms and equipment. Once the training starts, new volunteers will go to work side by side with the Police Officers and Volunteers.
Police Volunteers are at all community events that require a police presence and assist with traffic and crowd control. Their duties also include: emergency call-out, traffic surveys, handicap parking enforcement, radar/CMS trailer deployment, assist officers with crime scenes and traffic accidents, assist with boat patrol on Donner Lake, and vacation checks. They assisted the Town’s Public Works Department in traffic control during the construction of the Highway 80 and 89 roundabouts. VIPS also participate in special events, such, as, Truckee Thursdays, 4th of July festivities, bicycle rodeos, and others.
To date, the dedicated men and women of our VIPS program have contributed over 38,667 hours since the program was created in 2003 and total of over 230 hours in 2023. Our VIPS come in a minutes notice to assist our Department in times of emergency. They often call in when they hear of an emergency and ask how they can help. The Truckee Police Department is extremely proud of the VIPS program, and if you would like more information, please contact our Department and see how you can become a Truckee Police Volunteer.
Selection Process
The selection process consists of an oral interview with the Volunteer Coordinators. The Volunteer program will be explained in detail, and the applicant will have the opportunity to decide whether to participate.
Completion of a Personal History Statement (PHS) is required. The statement will request information concerning relatives, references, education, experience, employment history, military service (if applicable), financial, and DMV history. All volunteers must successfully pass a background investigation. A confidential report will be prepared, and delivered to TPD Chief of Police.

Newly appointed Police Volunteers will be required to attend a presentation covering an overview of the Department’s function and operational procedures, presented by Department Management.
