Why register my bike?

Bicycle theft is an ongoing reality and registering your bike aids in recovery if stolen. The information you provide will be put into our records management system and will be stored for reference. If a bicycle is recovered, we can use this information to help identify and return it to the owner.

Other ways to protect your bicycle:

  • Use a high-quality, sturdy U-lock that secures both the frame and at least one wheel to a fixed object.
  • Choose a lock that leaves as little space as possible between the lock and the bicycle.
  • Two locks are better than one. Use a U-lock for the frame and a cable lock for the wheels for extra protection.
  • Ensure the object you’re locking your bike to is sturdy and not easily moved or cut through.
  • Park and lock your bike in well-lit and well-traveled areas
  • When possible, do not park your bike on the sidewalk or street overnight
  • Take a photo of yourself with your bike so if it is ever stolen, you can easily prove it’s yours.
  • Registering your bike with a national registration database such as Project 529 or the Bike Index is recommended in addition to local registration with Truckee PD.

To register your bike with the Truckee Police Department, fill out the bike registration form and include at least one photo of your bike. You will receive confirmation that your bike’s registration was completed to the same email you used to submit the form.
